In fact almost all of those entering the industry beyond their mid twenties work independently in private houses. It stands to reason that this is the case because the jobs and the money never dry up for committed and diligent workers.Most domestic tradesmen and women find customers through other people they've worked for.

A training college will cover all your trade skills, but your attitude and manners will be down to you. (After all you never know who's considering your services!) Treating customers respectfully and courteously will always reap rewards. Employed commercial plumbers normally do an eight hour day, weekdays only. Domestic plumbers are best not to restrict themselves too rigidly though. Many working people can't afford to take time off work, so plumbers who will visit outside working hours can often get much better business.

City & Guilds certification courses can be studied in both private colleges and state ones. Most young people entering the industry straight from school will opt for an apprenticeship style of training by blending on-the-job NVQ training with their FE studies. However, those who are a little older usually prefer to do their training part-time alongside their current job. The commercial colleges are more geared up for their needs, as their courses are less rigid and focus more on the high-demand skill-sets. Private colleges will cost more initially, but the student looking for domestic self-employed work will gain relevant skill-sets much faster, and start generating income within months, not years.

Supplementary Skills

Any decent training programme will equip you for plumbing work in domestic properties. You'll also be able to qualify in supplementary skills which will allow you to take on bigger jobs yourself. If you take Part P for example you'll comply with the regulations for domestic electrical work. Having additional skills will make it easier to build your name. Each job will be more cost effective, and leave more money in your pocket. You won't have to work around plasterers or electricians timetables if you can do small jobs yourself.

In conclusion, broad-based commercial plumbing courses are the quickest and most efficient route into the self-employed domestic market.
